Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1925, Betty Jean McLeod was interested and involved in sports all her life.

At the age of 14, she played softball for 2 years for a City of Detroit Recreational team. While attending Denby HS in Detroit from 1939-43, she was a member of the varsity tennis, basketball and field hockey teams. She entered the school of Nursing at the Deaconess Hospital and played for the hospital basketball team for 3 years until her graduation in 1946. She moved to Cornwall with her husband Dr. Allan McLeod and 2 children in 1955.

In 1965, she became a member of the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. She was one of a 4-member team that brought the Ethel Ferguson Trophy to the club for the first time.

In 1970, she won the Ladies Club Championship and was to win this honour for a record seven times: during the years 1970-72, 74-76, and 79. As a member of the Club, she won many Club competitions, including the Ladies’ Invitational, Ladies Two Ball, and the Handicap Trophy. As a partner with Bill Markell, she won the prestigious Labour Day mixed Two Ball competition.

She also was very active in the Curling Community. She joined the Cornwall Curling Club in 1968. She was a member of the 1973 team that won the Centre Playdowns for the Stanley Trophy. She was the skip of the team that won the Challenge Trophy in 1976. She skipped a team that represented the Cornwall Curling Club in the Eastern Ontario Finals of the Lassie Tournament in 1976. She skipped teams which represented her club in the Eastern Ontario Finals for the Senior Ladies Trophy in the years 1977, 79 and 81. From 1973 through 1974, she and Bill Dickie were asked to attend the City Council meetings as special representatives of the Cornwall Recreation Committee.

In 1982, she joined the Cornwall Recreational Department Tennis Program and won the Ladies Singles Intermediate Trophy.

Mrs. Betty McLeod has 7 children who have all been very active in sports, ranging from hockey, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, and swimming.
