“Steve “Seg” Seguin Lived The Dream”

The Cornwall Minor Hockey Association graduate, after an outstanding final Ontario Hockey League season with the Peterborough Petes, got to play, as a 20-year-old rookie, in the National Hockey League.

Seguin, who had scored 55 goals and 51 assists for the Petes in the 1983-84 season, was in the Los Angeles Kings line-up in the fall of 1984, playing alongside NHL great Marcel Dionne.

Unfortunately, after having a solid pre-season, his regular season was cut short with an injury which saw him relegated to the American Hockey League, where he spent the rest of his pro career.

Following his outstanding season with the Petes, Seguin was named winner of the Outstanding Junior Athlete of the Year Award at the Cornwall Lions Club annual Awards Night. He also was named the Petes’ 1984 Hockey Sportsman of the Year recipient; this award is given to the player who best combines sportsmanship and playing ability.

Seguin launched his four-year OHL career with the Kingston Canadians. Selecting first overall, the Canadians made him the first player taken in the second round.

After three seasons, he was traded to the Petes.

His pro career took him to the New Haven Nighthawks, Hershey Bears and Baltimore Skipjacks of the AHL.

As a Cornwall native, Seguin became an outstanding player in the CMHA travelling team system. He was a perennial 100-point forward.

Steve also excelled in fastball and was awarded the Cornwall Lions Club softball award which recognizes the city’s Top Fastball Player.

Seguin also showed his skill in the Cornwall Flag Football League. In 1998, his Cornwall Panthers played in the national flag football Championships.

An OPP officer, Seguin participated in the seventh annual World Police and Fire Games which had 8,700 participants. He was part of the bronze-medal winning Ottawa Carleton regional flag football team.
