Barry Smith is the biggest reason why football is enjoying a renaissance in Cornwall and area high schools.

Barry was a star player in high school, and a contributor to an EOSSA Championship team that also won the prestigious “Edwards Cup”.

Barry finished his football career coaching at his beloved CCVS in 2005, and that team also went on to win the Edwards Cup after Barry passed away part way through the season from cancer.

High school football left Cornwall and area in the 1980s, but that didn’t deter Barry from coaching at the Atom level and eventually becoming the defensive coordinator for the newly formed Cornwall Optimist Minor Football program as the 90’s dawned.

Barry led his 1991 Midget football team, the Wildcats to the Ontario High School Football League final which was a sign of things to come.

The next year, Barry began a streak of guiding to five straight Championship games including three Championships.

Barry’s 1996 squad was so dominating, it didn’t even allow a point against the entire season.
