Art Anderson
Sport: Football
Year Inducted: 1968
Art Anderson was born in 1917 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After completing studies at the University of Toronto, eventually Art took a job in Cornwall. It was 1953 and Art would become a coaching ‘Saint.’
He coached St. Lawrence High School football teams from 1953 to 1964. Coaching the ‘Larries’ to more EOSSAA championship games than any of his peers. Big Blue went to six straight championships in Art’s first six years winning the last four of that run. His grid iron power house teams only missed the play-offs once during that period.
His basketball teams, won Championships in 1955, 1956, 1962, and 1967. Anderson had a knack in choosing his assistants in a way that they knew not just the sport, but also related to their charges.
SLHS athletes respected Mr. Anderson for his caring attitude towards keeping them in school at a time where school didn’t matter as much as making your way in the world — hence working and helping provide for struggling families.
Anderson would always refer to a lesson he learned from his days at UofT. “someone was good enough to give me direction” That mantra would likely make up his legacy. Art was a tennis star, and one of Cornwall’s great coaches.
Art Anderson died in 1991.
