For over 30 years prior to his induction into the Hall of Fame, Del Bergeron had coached or promoted Minor hockey, Minor softball, Minor baseball, Minor football, United Counties basketball, and school sports at St. Columban’s East and West, Immaculate Conception, and Bishop Macdonell.
He coached floor hockey, volleyball, basketball, and track & field after school and on week-ends.
Del and Alan Haskavitz founded the United Counties Basketball Program in 1976. He then coached the Bantam Girls All-Stars in 1978 to the Provincial Championship beating Welland, the favoured team.
In 1980, the girls won the Interprovincial Championship in Chateauguay competing against teams from Sweden and the best from Quebec.
Shortly after that he was selected to coach the Eastern Ontario basketball team for the Summer Games in 1980.
Boys Minor softball awarded Del the Coach of the Year Award in 1978 for winning the Bantam Boys City Championship.
St. Columban’s East won the Elementary School Championship in 1978-79 under the coaching of Del.
He was Coach of the Year in Minor hockey, Novice division after his team won the title in 1991.
Throughout all this, Del was involved with Minor baseball for over 15 years as coach, umpire, League Convenor, parade coordinator, groundskeeper, cafeteria chairman, and league President.
Del, along with his brother Lutt, Jim Francis, and Tim Gault, spearheaded the plan to build a Minor baseball facility near the Civic Complex.
For his work in baseball, Del was honoured as the Baseball Person of the Year in 1989 at the Lions Club Sports Award Dinner. He had won the Executive of the Year Award in 1989, and the President’s Award three times.
