Roney (Zip) Jamieson

Roney “Zip” Jamieson most likely inherited his love for sports from his father Moe who is also in the Hall of Fame in the category of lacrosse.
His introduction to organized lacrosse came at the age of 10 at Central Public School under the supervision of Pat Petepiece and then upon graduation he progressed up through the OCOT organization.
In 1947, Walt McDonald recruited Zip to play for OCOT in the Cornwall Junior League and they won the Championship that year. They then represented Eastern Ontario and ousted the Quebec Champs in two straight games. They were to meet St. Catharines for the Eastern Canadian Championship but the series was cancelled.
While still of junior age, he joined the Cornwall Senior Team in the Eastern Ontario Senior League, won the league, knocked out the Quebec All-Stars for the Eastern Canadian Championship and advanced to play OLA Champs, Hamilton Tigers. Hamilton won the series 2 games to 1 and went on to beat New Westminster for Canada’s premier lacrosse trophy, the Mann Cup. Zip’s contribution to the team was recognized with him being noted “Most Valuable Player” and recipient of the “Laniel Trophy.” In league play, he scored 75 goals and assisted on 46 others for a total of 121 points. Against the powerhouse Hamilton team, he scored 8 goals.
Hamilton recognized his exceptional ability with the gutted-stick and invited him to their training camp. He made the team and played three quarters of the season but left on his own to come back home. He was 4th highest scorer at the time.
After finishing out the 1949 season with Alexandria Maroons, he rejoined the Cornwall Seniors in 1950, through the trade process. Ironically, Alexandria beat out Cornwall for the Eastern Championship but Zip was asked and played for Alexandria in the All-Ontario Senior “B” Championships, losing to Huntsville on a last second goal.
Actually, Zip was an outstanding all-around athlete but with excellence in his first love – lacrosse.
He also played in other sports such as: baseball, softball, football, basketball, hockey, volleyball, broomball, and was a 9 handicap in golf.
