Richard “Dick” Kalil was born in Cornwall on July 11, 1938. Dick’s career in tennis began on the local tennis courts where, at an early age, he became so proficient that he won most of the local Championships.
At age 15, Dick entered the Toronto Telegram Public Parks Junior Men’s Tennis Tournament. He displayed his ability in this sport by reaching the semi-finals.
In 1952, Dick won the Ontario Junior Tennis Championship in Toronto. To win this event, he defeated many of the prominent young tennis stars in Ontario including Marcel Chartrand and the favourite Dennis Forget of Wrightville.
