Edward “Ed” Lumley’s sports history began in Windsor in the 1950’s, where his athletic prowess was recognized across many high school sports activities. His real claim to fame came as the star quarterback of the Ontario Championship football team, the Junior Windsor AKO Fratmen.
In the 1960’s, the Lumley family moved to Cornwall, and Ed’s leadership in local sports and politics has left a legacy that will long be remembered and respected.
During the 60’s, Ed was instrumental in forming and developing the Cornwall Chargers football team. As a key investor, General Manager and coach, he developed an affiliation with the Ottawa Rough Riders for the newly-named Mustangs. The team progressed quickly and made it to the playoffs in Ed’s third year as coach. This football development has provided a foundation for this sport in Cornwall, which is still enjoyed by youth today.
In the 1970’s, Ed devoted his energy to the Cornwall Royals. He acted as colour commentator on local radio and was assistant coach. When Cornwall needed a better arena to keep the Royals alive, Ed’s successes as coach and in finding grant money convinced the league to let the Royals remain. As the Federal M.P. for the area, he obtained the grant money that resulted in the Cornwall Civic Complex and Ed Lumley Arena being built.
In 1993, as honorary chair of the Ontario Winter Games, Ed provided guidance to a celebration which resulted in an annual scholarship award for local outstanding youth athletes.
Ed also acted as Mayor of Cornwall, Member of Parliament, and Minister of Trade. His politcal work and ensuing career with Nesbitt Burns have made him a key player in international business, allowing him less time to be involved in Cornwall. However, he can still be seen and heard at local arenas and football fields, coaching from the sidelines, and he maintains close contact with many local sports leaders. He continues to encourage others to develop competitive sports initiatives for the Cornwall area.
