Theresa (Terry) (Desrosiers) McGillis
Sport: Softball
Year Inducted: 1980
Born in 1929, Theresa “Terry” McGillis (nee Desrosiers) was described by her basketball coach, Hall of Famer Nick Kaneb, as an all-round athlete. She participated in many sports. She was an athlete of note during her years at Nativity School, and during her years at C. C. & V. S.
She was part of the Cornwall girls’ basketball team that won the Dominion of Canada Championship in October 1949. On that team, which played by men’s rules in those days, Terry was a guard who shot well and played fine defense. In the Dominion Championship, the Cornwall team defeated Montreal in Montreal on Friday night, then traveled to Toronto to win the Dominion title the following day.
In addition to her basketball prowess, Terry was a dominant force in area 5-pin and 10-pin bowling leagues. In her 5-pin league, she won the high average for six consecutive years.
As might be expected, Terry was an outstanding softball player in Eastern Ontario. She was a long-time catcher for Ruth MacLeod, who was the best pitcher in the area for many years.
Terry died in 1997.
