Maurice “Moe” Savard played with the Cornwall Chevies from 1956 to 1958 scoring 23 goals with 32 assists in the first year and 28 goals and 36 assists in the second year.

He then played with the Kingston Merchants in the 1958/59 season.

In 1959, Moe, a native of Cornwall moved from the Kingston Merchants to the Charlotte Checkers of the Eastern Hockey League, at the age of 27.

Savard was one player who believed that in order to score goals, you have to be on the ice. So the most penalties he picked up in one season was 29 minutes in 1960-61. In 1964-65 he went through the entire schedule without drawing a penalty. In fact, he reached his 500th game before he hit his 100-minute career mark in penalties.

He was 35 playing in his 500th game in 1967 when the Charlotte fans and merchants showered the eight year veteran with nearly $2000. in cash and gifts, including a $500. bond from Checkers management and a baseball weekend in Atlanta.

In his nine years with Charlotte he averaged 33 goals and 50 assists per year.
