Bob McNally is reputed to be one of the best running backs ever in Cornwall high school football.
As a fullback, his speed, aggressiveness, and compact physical build helped Bob lead the C.C.V.S. Golden Raiders to the Eastern Ontario Senior High School Championship in 1965 – their first up to that time.
He’d started playing football in the C.C.V.S. intramural league, and, in 1963 and 1964, he alternated between halfback and fullback. For his outstanding performance in 1965, he was recognized by the Lions Club as Football Player of the Year.
Bob enrolled at the University of Windsor where they were just getting into senior inter-collegiate football. Playing defence, he was assigned the tough inside linebackers spot and one of the twin fullback positions on offence. In his second year, Bob was one of the key players on Windsor’s powerhouse team which defeated a strong Bishop’s College team to advance into the Western College Bowl against the University of Manitoba. McNally and the Lancers had an outstanding and successful year. In 1970, they had the most dominant and potent offense in the league, although this was not enough to win the Championship.
Bob’s athletic abilities were not confined to football. He had many successes in track and field, particularly in the 100 and 220 yard sprints.
A late starter in lacrosse, Bob became an immediate star with the Junior Miller-Hughes Mustangs, so good, that he was acquired by the winning Indian team which went on to the Ontario playoffs.
