Morton Belmore

Morton “Mort” Belmore started playing hockey in the O.C.O.T. in 1940, and continued on to 1948, winning many trophies and titles.
In 1949, at the age of 16, he started work at the Howard Smith Paper Mill and played hockey in the Inter-Department Hockey League.
In 1950, he had a try-out with the Montreal Nationals, a Junior “A” team, but did not stay. He played with the New York Café Junior “B” club in 1951, and was called up to the Cornwall Pontiac Senior “A” club.
From 1952-53, he played with the Inkerman Rockets team. He tried out for the New York Rangers hockey club in 1953, but returned to the Cornwall Colts Senior “A” club from 1953-54. They won the Provincial League Championships.
From 1954-58, he continued to play Senior “A” hockey, with the Eastern Ontario Senior Quebec All-Star team, and the Cornwall Chevies. He then played with the St. Lawrence Intermediate League, and the Domtar Inter-Department Hockey League, and won the Manufacturer’s Cup in 1964, 1967, and 1968.
He started playing with the Cornwall Hubs team in January 1970, but soon joined the Cornwall Old-Timer club, where he stayed for 12 years. During that time, the team won the Central Canada Tournament and a gold medal (1978); the silver medal at the World Hockey Championship in St. Petersburg (1978-79); the Stormont County “A” (winner in 1978; finalist in 1979); the silver medal in the Vancouver B.C. Tournament (1980); and the First Annual Tournament in Gatineau, Quebec (1982).
Mort has also been an avid bowler for 50 years, winning the Domtar Tournament in 1964, 1967, 1969, with second place in 1971.
