Lutt Bergeron Jr.
Sport: Softball: Year Inducted: 1982
Lutt Bergeron Jr. played junior baseball as a member of the Walt McDonald’s Cornwall All-Stars which won the All-Ontario Junior Championship one year and were finalists in another.
It is doubtful if any one player in Cornwall softball history has ever dominated one position so long and so capably as Lutt did over a period of 20 years from 1952 – 1971, as centre fielder for Howard Smith – Domtar teams. He could probably be accused of establishing squatter’s rights in the centre field area of King George Park.
During his playing career, he played on 10 City Championship teams, was a many time All-Star and won the batting Championship on 3 occasions with averages of .385 in 1963, .410 in 1965, and in his final year as playing coach, he hit .450.
Lutt also played on many Major tournament winning teams, such as 3 time winner of the prestigious Massena-Alcoa Tournament, including others at Moose Creek, South Mountain and Beauharnois.
In 1971, Lutt was recognized by the Lions Club as Outstanding Softball Player in Cornwall.
He went into semi-retirement in 1971. He then became involved with playing and coaching with the Squire Shop Old Timers.
Up to 1982, Lutt had given 24 years of service to minor hockey as coach, referee, and executive. He was a Legion representative on the Minor Baseball Executive for 17 years. He was Commissioner of Minor Softball since it was organized. For 4 years, he was a member of the City Parks & Recreation Committee. He served for 8 years as a Director of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame.
