Newell Brown’s hockey passport has been well travelled, starting from the old Cornwall Township Minor Hockey Association to the National Hockey League.
Between, he has made stops in the professional ranks as both a player and a coach.
He is currently director of coaches for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks after four seasons as an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In 1978, Cornwall Royals made Newell a Minor Midget selection and in his second season he lived the dream of winning a Memorial Cup Championship, when the Royals defeated the highly favoured Peterborough Petes in Regina.
His next step up the hockey ladder came the following season when he joined the powerful Michigan State Spartans and served as team captain over his final three seasons. He collected 186 points on 66 goals and 120 assists in 146 games, including 22-51-73 in 42 games in 1981-82 when he earned first team All-CCHA honours.
He was a member of one NCAA Championship squad (1983) and three CCHA tournament title winners.
The seeds for a professional career were sown when Vancouver Canucks drafted him 158th overall. He played with Fredericton of the American Hockey League and Muskegon of the International Hockey League.
In 1985-86, he was captain of the Canadian National team. The following season, he returned to Michigan as assistant coach.
In 1990, he became head coach of Michigan Tech University and in 1992 Detroit Red Wings named him head coach of their number one farm team, Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL.
In 1996, he joined the Chicago Blackhawks as assistant coach, the same position he held with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks from 1998-2000, when he was named associated head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
