Bob Flaro was a proverbial late bloomer when it came to golf, but he made up for lost time in a big way.

As a teenager growing up in Cornwall, Bob’s first love was hockey, but with his junior and college days behind him, golf began to get more of his attention.

It wasn’t until 1985 that he ventured into competitive golf outside the friendly confines of Summerheights Golf Links and Cornwall Golf and Country Club.

However, during that short time as an amateur, he won the 1986 and 1987 Cornwall Golf and Country Club Championships and competed successfully in Quebec Golf Association events, finishing in the top 10 in the 1986 Quebec Amateur, finishing second in the 1987 Alexander of Tunis and teaming with Richard Greer to win the 1987 Montreal District Four Ball Championship.

He also represented the Cornwall Golf and Country Club at the first Canadian Club Champions tournament in 1987 at Glen Abbey, finishing in the top 10.

In the winter of 1988, Bob followed his dream of trying professional golf and moved to Florida where he won an event on the Space Coast Tour, a mini-tour that has launched many of the stars of the PGA Tour.

In the early 1990s, Bob came back to Cornwall as assistant pro at Cornwall Golf and Country Club. When his mentor, Hocan Olsson left for another pro position, Bob was promoted to the head pro position.

During this time, Bob has competed successfully on both the Ottawa Zone Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association and Quebec Professional Golfers’ Association circuits.

He has won Ottawa Zone Championships, the 1996 Ottawa Valley Assistant Pros’ Zone Championship, the 1999 Cisco Systems Classic, the 1999 Cornwall Open, 2000 Spring Open at Beaconsfield, Que., the 2000 QPGA event, the 2001 Compaq Masters, the 2001 Cornwall Open and the 2002 QPGA Jameson Masters. He tied for fourth in the 2002 Canadian Club Pro Championship.

In September 1997, Bob’s career hit a new high note when he qualified for the Bell Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club.
