Jocelyn Fraser
Sport: Swimming
Year Inducted: 1988

Jocelyn Fraser comes by her interest in sports naturally. Her father was a cricketer in Australia, her mother a tennis player, and her brother played soccer for the Academy at Woolwich. Her interests lay in tennis and cricket with swimming as a year-round sport. She played on teams in school, college and in the armed services.

Jocelyn came to Canada in 1946 and was employed by the Pictou Community Centre in Pictou, N.S. She immediately decided to form the Picton Swim Club. It was not easy as they had to practice in the harbour and compete with the tide, but they did compete and became well-known in the province.

In the early 50’s, Jocelyn was invited to move to Hantsport, Nova Scotia to head up an aquatic program at the new pool. Once again, she formed a swim club which competed with a great deal of success in provincial meets. She also took over as aquatic director at the RCAF station in Greenwood, N.S.

While the Greenwood Dolphins had a great deal of success, Jocelyn decided to come to Cornwall as Girls’ Athletic Director at the new Cornwall YM-YWCA. Almost immediately, the Sea Lions Swim Club was formed. The early Sea Lions travelled extensively, attending meets all over Ontario, Quebec, New York and the Maritimes. Numbers grew, and its members became well-known. Parents of Charter Sea Lions acted as coaches, drivers and chaperones.

Jocelyn was the driving force behind the Cornwall Sea Lions, an organization which has made quite a name for itself in the Swimming world of Eastern Ontario. Twenty years later, the club is still grinding out competitive swimmers, although the name was changed four years ago to the Upper Canada Swim Club. Many swimmers have gone on to excel at university level meets, and the nationals.

Jocelyn Fraser’s talent and ability are well known throughout the swimming world. She is an instructor who ranks among the finest in North America today.
