Kaneb George

George Thomas Kaneb
Sport: Tennis
Year Inducted: 1977

George Thomas Kaneb, born March 28, 1918, was one of the best tennis players to develop during the period of the 30’s and early 40’s when tennis was really booming in Cornwall.

There were around two dozen players at the time of approximately equal calibre. Besides many tournaments and inter-city competition, there was a strong 6-team city league that played on 20 courts spread throughout the city.

George was a tennis fundamentalist. He learned the basics well, worked hard at them and as a result had probably the best-rounded game in the Cornwall area.

In 1937, he reached the finals at the Ottawa District and Eastern Ontario Junior Championship.

He won the Cornwall and District Open Singles title in both 1938 and 1939. Paired with brother, Nick, they won the Open Doubles these same two years.

In 1940, while furthering his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, he was a member of their team competing against the Ivy League Universities and other New England Colleges. It was a rarity to find a Canadian good enough for this caliber of competition.

Playing hockey for MIT, he was chosen for the All-New England All-Star Team and lead the league in scoring.

He was also a fine senior softball player, and one of the best curlers in Cornwall, playing on several Championship Teams.

He died March 28, 2006.
