Nicholas (Nick) Kaneb

Nicholas “Nick” Kaneb, born in 1916, started curling with 60 lb. rocks on natural ice at the Water Street Arena in 1946.
In 1948, his first year in the Cornwall Curling Club, he won a set of granites competing in the Ontario Curling Association Edinburgh competition. He was a member of the Cornwall Club Championship rinks in 1966-67, 67-68.
In 1971, his rink won eight straight games to capture the Chateau-Frontenac Trophy in the Quebec City “A” event. This same year, Nick took his team to Kingston and won the Fisherman’s Trophy, a first for any Cornwall rink in this competition.
In 1973, his rink made the Burden Finals, a runner-up trophy to the Silver Tankard. In 1972, he was chosen Cornwall Curler of the Year.
An outstanding curler for over 25 years, Mr. Kaneb skipped his rink to second place in the 1974 Ontario Curling Association Seniors Championships, the final game going to extra ends.
A real sportsman, Nick excelled in football, tennis, and hockey. He was awarded a football scholarship at an American University, Clarkson in Potsdam while playing tackle for CCVS. At Clarkson, he won letters in tennis and hockey. Nick was one of the outstanding tennis doubles players winning several district Championships partnered with his brother George.
His coaching career includes city and district softball Championships with OCOT Ladies and Wyman’s Men’s team. Nick’s highlight as a coach was winning the 1948 Canadian Intermediate Championship with the Ladies OCOT basketball team.
He died September 7, 2008.
