John Morgan was outstanding during his basketball playing career with the C.C.V.S. Golden Raiders, and the Carleton University Ravens.
He was a 5’10” guard, a dominant player, and led his team in scoring all three years he played with the Senior Raiders.
In 1961, C.C.V.S. won the EOSSA Invitational Christmas Tournament. Morgan led all scorers in the 8 team tournament with 43 points. Then, for the first time since 1957, the C.C.V.S. Golden Raiders captured the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Championship. Newspaper reports, “The Excellent ball handling and sharp shooting of John Morgan gave C.C.V.S the slim victory, weaving down the large Kingston floor with ease.” He led all scorers with 39 points in the 2 game final series.
In 1962, the Raiders won a second successive EOSSA Invitational Tourney, John was second high scorer. In the Carleton University Invitational Tournament, the Raiders lost in the semi-finals, but John was top scorer in the 2 games played. The Raiders lost the EOSSA Senior title to St. Lawrence. John scored 23 of 33 points, and dominated the game with his deadly accurate set shot. He was winner of the league’s individual scoring crown with a personal high of 34 points in one game.
In 1963, C.C.V.S. won the EOSSA “A” Invitational Christmas Tournament, for the third successive year. Again, John led all scoring with 42 points in 3 games giving him the ribbons as Top Individual in the tournament. At the Assumption University Invitational Purple Ball Tournament, Morgan led all scorers with 57 points, and was picked for the 5 man All-Star team. The Raiders then won the EOSSA Championship beating Kingston’s Queen Elizabeth. John scored 24 and 22 points respectively in the 2 game final.
In 1964, John enrolled at Carleton University, and almost immediately established himself as a starting guard with the Ravens. His big night was 27 points against Sir George Williams College.
In 1965, John played with the Ottawa Teachers College, returning to Cornwall to play in the Men’s Senior League where he led the league in scoring one year with 135 points in 8 games.
John then moved to Brockville and played basketball for another 10 years. He also coached and refereed for many years.
