Robert Clair Relyea was born in Cornwall on February 13, 1897. Robert started boxing at the age of 14; He won the boxing Championship in the Welterweight category at the University of Toronto Intercollegiate Sport Program during the early 1920’s. He won the Championship of Cornwall and District at the old Victoria Arena by defeating Bernard Gagnon.
Robert went overseas with the 154th Battalion and also won the divisional boxing Championship in England.
Robert traveled the world working during the twenties and returned to North America and retired as a metallurgist for Cadillac Motor in Michigan. One of his recreational activities included membership in the Detroit Curling Club. Of course, never forgetting his Canadian roots, ice skating was important to him, and he hosed the Relyea family back yard for his three children Chester, Bruce and Jean to skate every winter.
Robert Relyea died on October 12, 1966 in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
