Joe Sanborn
Sport: Basketball
Year Inducted: 1988
Joe Sanborn was born in Portland, Maine, and was an outstanding athlete in high school earning letters in both football and basketball.
After graduating from high school, and joining the army for two years, Joe was recruited to play football at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
Joe taught and coached at St. Peter’s High School in Peterborough as well as in Maine.
He arrived in Cornwall in 1962 to start a teaching career at C.C.V.S. He immediately became active in the Cornwall sports scene as coach of the Senior Raiders basketball team. It was 1970 before the Raiders won their first league title under Sanborn, but it was the start of an incredible series of successes. From 1970 to 1978 C.C.V.S. won seven E.O.S.S.A Championships, and trips to the O.F.S.A.A tournaments.
From 1975 to 1979, Sanborn-coached teams were unbeaten in league play in S.D. & G., and in 1978 C.C.V.S. won the Consolation Championship of the O.F.S.A.A. Provincial tourney.
In 1981, Sanborn retired from coaching after leaving a record that will be hard to duplicate. It is a measure of respect to Joe that many of his former players have moved into coaching of young basketballers in Cornwall.
His former players have donated a trophy to be given to the staff member who contributed most to athletics at C.C.V.S.
