Eleven different sports are represented by the sixteen inductees that make up the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
We are proud to announce these athletes and builders will be inducted into the Hall at the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame Induction Dinner October 5, 2024:
Cassie Seguin – Hockey
During her minor hockey career Cassie played for the National Capital Senators where she led the Sens to a championship posting a 34-7-2 record between the pipes which included 17 shut-outs and top goalie in the league. In 2009 she represented Canada at the IIHF U-16 World Championship winning a silver medal. As a member of Team Ontario that same year, Cassie won the Canadian U-16 championship. She went to Princeton University and played two seasons with the Tigers finishing with a 7-10-3 record with five shut-outs.
Maurice ‘Moe’ Jodoin – Lacrosse
Moe played in the CMLA during the sixties and was assistant coach on the Cornwall Novices when they won the Provincial Championship in 1970. He graduated to the junior Celtics and scored 122 goals and 94 assists in 94 games over two seasons. Moe moved up to the junior “A” ranks with the Peterborough PCOs. In three seasons Moe scored 136 goals and added 115 assists helping win three consecutive Minto Cup National Championships. That team was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Moe entered the CLHOF for a second time as a member of the Coquitlam Adanacs Senior “A” team that won the world Box Lacrosse Championship in 1980.
Jenna Flannigan – Baseball
After joining the national team in 2011, Flannigan helped Canada win the bronze medal at the 2012 IBAF World Cup in Edmonton, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored in the bronze medal game. She was also named to the World Cup All-Star team as an outfielder, thanks to her .586 batting average, 17 hits and 14 runs scored, all ranking her second in the tournament. Flannigan won a national title with Team Quebec in 2011 and another with Team Ontario in 2013 when she was named top hitter of the tournament. Jenna represented her country for six years.
John Nazar – Hockey
John joined the Royals in 1971 during their third season in the QMJHL and helped them finish in first place and advance to the Memorial Cup Tournament where they defeated Edmonton and Peterborough and brought the cup to Cornwall for the first time. The truculence of the Wensink, Lupinette, Nazar line helped establish the Royals as serious contenders who would not be intimidated.
He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1974 but opted to play for Nepean in the CJHL where he was an all star. The following season he attended St. Mary’s University in Halifax where he played for three years and also helped coach. John later “gave back” to the game as a successful minor hockey coach in St. Catharines.
Mike Piquette – Builder
An avid sportsman his entire life Mike became General Manager and Governor of the CJHL Cornwall Colts. From July 1998 – June 2001 he was the GM/Governor for the Nepean Raiders. During this time as Colts and Raiders GM from1995 and through November of 2001 he was director of Marketing: Central Junior Hockey League. While in this position he developed and implemented league marketing and sponsorship programs. In July 2007- Aug 2010 Mike returned to the Cornwall Colts Junior A Hockey Club in the position of Business / Hockey Operations Manager. Mike’s volunteer experience is extensive – Vice President and Board Member – Cornwall Minor Hockey Association.Hockey Coach – 15 years plus with Cornwall Minor Hockey, Seaway Valley Minor Hockey, Cornwall City Jr B, Church Athletic League.
For the past eight (8) years Mike has published and owns Sports Energy News. A publication that highlights local area Athletes past and present accomplishments.
Kirby Camplin – Football Builder
Kirby, the face of Cornwall minor football for most of this century has built the minor Wildcats. For the most part during 18 seasons of NCAFA action have been very competitive, but in more recent years have surged to more titles and arguably have become a dominant franchise. Consider that impact given Cornwall fields teams in four of the five tackle divisions the NCAFA offers, The organization noted Camplin joined the Wildcats in 2006, the same year Cornwall began to play in the long-established NCAFA. In 2015, when Camplin became president of the Wildcats, or more formally the Cornwall Minor Football Association, He’s coached at every level of NCAFA, while also being an outstanding leader, mentor and president of minor football in Cornwall.
Trevor Steynor – Basketball Builder
Trevor was a special assistant coach with Basketball Ontario Under 15 boys team. That summer, the Ontario team won the gold medal beating Quebec in the final. He continued helping Carleton University with Scouting the NCAA teams. Trevor would gather information and game tapes to help Carleton prepare that summer of 2014. At the end of the summer Trevor was approached to help change the culture and direction of the LaCite College in Ottawa. LaCite College plays in the Ontario College Athletic Association(East Division). Despite some growing pains in his first year with the college team (2014-2015), Trevor was part of a new basketball academy league in Canada. The team was called Canada Topflight Academy from Ottawa. The team won the NPA National Championship and were honoured by the Ottawa Sport Awards.
Rene ‘Poppy’ Tessier – Para Athlete
Rene ‘Poppy’ Tessier would face many challenges when an early childhood illness led to Rene losing his ability to fully walk. He was able to use crutches but would be bound to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Being a paraplegic did not stop Rene from accomplishing his goals and making his mark in the sporting history books of Cornwall.
By 1976 Wheelchair sports would finally become an organized sport in Canada as Regional & National competition to determine those eligible to compete Internationally representing Canada, in what is now known as the Paralympics.
Rene would begin vying for his chances to represent Canada at official international competition in 1977. In Just under ten years, rene won 27 medals, 21 Gold competing for Ontario and Canada.
Jeff Legue – Hockey
Jeff led the Colts to two straight CCHL Championships and Fred Page Cup appearances. After winning the Fred Page Cup in 2000 team represented the CJHL at the Royal Bank Cup in Alberta. Jeff scored 109 goals in three seasons with the Colts. He then attended Ferris State University scoring 68 goals in four seasons. After a brief ECHL career Jeff went to Great Britain playing 9 seasons where he played 382 games amassing 204 goals and 250 assists. The Sheffield Steelers won four league titles and went to the championship final once.
Bruce Racine – Hockey
After one season with the Hawkesbury Hawks of the CJHL, Bruce went to Northeastern University in Boston where he was named All-American twice and MVP of the Hockey East Championship. Bruce has been inducted into the Beanpot Hall of Fame (1995) and the Northeastern Hall of Fame (2001). In 1994, he was voted to Hockey East’s first All-Decade Team. In 2009, he was voted to NCAA Hockey East 25 year Anniversary team as well as Northeastern’s 25 year Hockey East team. Drafted by Pittsburgh he was a part of their first Stanley Cup in 1991. After retiring from hockey he founded the Racine Goalie Academy and has been coaching St Louis area Goalies since 2006. Bruce is a five-time recipient of the Community Service Award in the IHL and the American Hockey League AHL.
Carol Ann Baxter – Golf
In 1970 Carol Ann began playing the sport on a family constructed golf course, and this is where she would build a passion for golf and develop a skill set that would lead her to success and a career that most would dream of. In 1993 she joined the CPGA and became an assistant golf professional at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. By 1994 she qualified and joined the LPGA and started competing on the Futures Tour, Du Maurier Series, and the Moonlight tour based out of Florida. She would later attain class “A” status with the LPGA, act as the head professional at the Cornwall Golf & Country Club, and be the Executive Director for the LPGA of Canada Ottawa Zone. In 1999 Carol Ann purchased Archie’s Family Golf Centre and has operated the business and provided private lessons.
Sean Boulerice – Referee / Coach
Sean progressed through the Hockey Canada Officiating Program, achieving the highest level of certification as a Level 6 Referee in 1993. He has an impressive resume of local, regional, national, and international experience, including local minor hockey, CHL, OHL, CIAU, AHL, NHL preseason, and pre-Olympic IIHF. Sean has also had tremendous success in coaching men’s and women’s hockey at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall for 18 years, helping establish both as premier programs in Ontario college hockey.
Dwayne MacLennan – Golf Builder
Dwayne and brother Ken opened a nine hole course on July 23rd, 1962. It was a tough go at first and Ken sold his share to Dwayne in 1963. Dwayne worked hard on the course while holding down other jobs just to support his family. Despite the situation, and with constant hard work and numerous improvements the golf course got busier each year making his golf course one of the finest public facilities in the region. Today, Summerheights has 36 holes, has hosted hundreds of charity tournaments and is open to the public and shares in the success of many area golfers. Dwayne received worthy recognition along the way, 1998 Sportsman of the Year Lions Club. Small Business of the Year Chamber of Commerce 1996. Life Time Achievement Award Chamber of Commerce 2002.
Gilles Crepeau – Hockey
Gilles came to Cornwall from Sudbury and quickly established himself on the ice. In three seasons with the Cornwall Royals Gilles scored 98 goals helping the Royals win back to back memorial cup Championships.(Under Construction)
Richard ‘Rick’ McCullough – Golf
Rick began to focus his athletic talents on golf in his early twenties after meeting and training with the legendary Hank Haney who had previously been instructor to Mark O’Meara and Tiger Woods.
As a member of the CG&CC Rick won five club championships and finished runner-up twelve times. He was “A” Class Cornwall Open Champion in 2003 and runner-up in 1998 and 2001 and won seven mixed titles in the Cornwall Open with three different partners.
He achieved success outside the city as well twice winning the Phoenix Trophy for best-ball competition in Beaconsfield Quebec. He also played on the Quebec Amateur Tour where he was ranked in the top thirty, three times and won the Quebec Mixed Championship with partner Lise Lalonde in 2005. As a senior he has won the 2018 Quebec Seniors Match-Play Championship and has twice qualified to play for Golf Canada’s Senior Championship.
David Murphy – Builder Media
David had a passion for athletics and through his volunteerism, working career, and live broadcasting became a very recognizable figure in the sports community. His reach has touched a number of sports, but his most recognizable work has been in Hockey and Motorsports. Dave’s hockey broadcasting career spans multiple decades as the voice of both the Cornwall Colts of the CJHL and the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. Combined he has spent more than 20 years in the booth calling over 800 games. He has won multiple broadcasting awards through his work with TVCogeco Kingston Frontenacs home games, and Cornwall Colts away games. David had the opportunity on a number of occasions to be behind the mic for both Fred Page Cup and RBC Cup games. He continued his work with the Cornwall Colts working with the team in a marketing and promotions role. DIRT fans have also enjoyed David’s play-by-play action around the racetrack as he worked at the Brockville Motor Speedway and alongside Brian Mulligan for 15 years at the Cornwall Motor Speedway.
Starting in 1968 the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame today boasts more than 400 athletes, coaches and builders who excelled in their sports of choice.
